A two-night event called “Dibble’s Birthday Party” (a.k.a. “Rob Dibble’s Birthday Boobie Rodeo”), set for Fri. Feb. 2 and Sat. Feb. 3 at the Map Room, features noisy rock stuff from The Defilers and various guests. They somehow snagged N.C. redneck garage-rock trio Southern Culture on the Skids for a big show on Fri. After several years of gigging around town, popular Charleston ’80s rock/new wave cover band Weird Science officially called it quits earlier this month. The most recent lineup featured guitarists Raymond Santiago and Jason Gantt, multi-instrumentalist, headband expert, and comedian Jason Cooper, bassist Chris McLernon, and drummer/singer John Befumo. This week, Tonik announced the live debut of the newly-assembled Play List — featuring most of the former members of Weird Science with a fresh new set of ’80s and ’90s hits. They play at the King Street venue on Fri. Feb. 2.


The Fifth Annual Charleston Battle of the Bands Competition has announced a call for entries this week. The contest will feature five finalists, each of whom will perform a quick set in front of a full audience and a panel of “celebrity judges” at the Music Farm on Thurs. March 29. The deadline for entries is Mon. Feb. 19. Students will choose five finalists by Feb. 23.
