The effort to overturn Gov. Sanford’s veto of open enrollment, letting students cross district boundaries to attend better schools, failed in the House today.
The vote, 60 to 52, to overturn Sanford fell 16 votes shy of the two-thirds vote needed to make the bill law over the governor’s objection.
It was a practical solution that failed due to conservatives that want to send these kids to private schools and because some in the black community are concerned that if parents can pick, they’ll pull students from failing integrated schools.
