Austin’s raucous and soulful Reckless Kelly (named after a folk-hero Australian outlaw) put plenty of cowboy vibe and country-western spirt in their assertive style of rock ‘n’ roll. Fronted by guitarist and songwriter Willy Braun, the lineup includes Cody Braun on fiddle and mandolin, David Abeyta on guitar, Jimmy McFeeley on bass, and Jay Nazz on drums. Willy and Cody grew up immersed in music, touring and playing with their father’s band, Muzzie Braun & The Boys. They formed Reckless Kelly in 1997 as a jangly country-rock act. The Austin Chronicle named them Best Roots-Rock Band for six years running. Hard-touring Nashville alt-rock songwriter and bandleader Will Hoge and his most recent quartet make it to town every summer for a stint at the Windjammer. This year, they return in support of their 10-song album, The Man Who Killed Love, produced by Ken Coomer (ex-Wilco) and Charlie Brocco. The recent single “Pocketful of Change” enjoyed airplay on modern rock stations around the South last year. They perform a two-night stint at the Windjammer this week. Detroit alt-country sextet The Deadstring Brothers share the stage on Fri. July 27 behind their latest release, Starving Winter Report. Nashville quartet The Lonely Hearts hit the stage on Sat. Presented by Star 99.7 and billed as a loungy evening event in the Exhibition Hall at the Gaillard, “Jazz in July” features veteran sax player Kim Waters and a handful of terrific local musicians and vocalists. An acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and producer, Waters specializes in the “urban smooth jazz” style — a silky blend of contemporary jazz, pop, soul, and R&B. “The most incredible gift is to be able to do something of value that makes people happy, and music has the ability to do that like nothing else,” Waters says. “I have been blessed to share what I love with the world.” Waters is touring in support of his 14th studio album, You Are My Lady (Shanachie). “I love performing live concerts,” says Waters. “In a live setting I can really stretch out and improvise and play whatever I want. Led by Pittsburgh rapper J. Sands and Savannah’s hip-hop/groove collective Dope Sandwich, the “Summer Sandlot Tour 2007” makes two stops in town this week. J. Sands, known best as one half of hip-hop duo Lone Catalysts (alongside J. Rawls), recently released The Breaks Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 on the Groove Attack label. Dope Sandwich features a diverse lineup of rappers, musicians, and turntablists, including Basik Lee (pictured), Zone D, Mack, Lyrics, Blue Collar, Crook, Gloom, DJ Valis, DJ Life, Mr.E, UsVSThem, Righteous The Poet, and Know-etic. Their new disc, The Walking Sick, was recently self-released and distributed around the Carolinas and Georgia.
