You know me. Little idea just pop in my head.

Gov. Mark Sanford issued a statement Monday calling on the legislature to take action in the state on immigration before calling for a constitutional convention (which he deemed a long-term answer). Who knows why people do anything, but it seemed like an attempt to take some steam from Sen. Glenn McConnell’s call for a CC late last week. Then there’s the fact that the legislature really can’t do anything until they get back to work in January.

So, why now. Well, here’s a crazy idea. What if Gov. Sanford was looking at the barren and emaciated field of GOP hopefuls to challenge Sen. Lindsey Graham and thought to himself, “Why not me?” Immigration is, without a doubt, Graham’s albatross.

Some may ask whether Sanford has the support of a GOP that has, at times, been at odds with him. But, like Graham, he’s big on principle and if anyone can build a war chest to combat Lindsey’s, it’s Sanford. You’ll also remember that the national eye of the Weekly Standard came to South Carolina over the summer to praise Sanford for his attempt to reform South Carolina politics.

For those out-of-state forces looking to ouster Graham, that may be all the push they need.
