The three-way Democratic race to replace exiting Rep. Floyd Breeland took what may be the final turn before the dash to the primary finish line on June 10.

Breeland announced Tuesday that he was endorsing former Congressional staffer and Iraq War vet Clay Middleton.

“Clay is a great example for young people to see what hard work and perseverance will get you in life,” Breeland said in a statement. “It is our job as a community to continue to support Clay and this next generation of leadership.”

The seat had for some time seemed an easy grab for City of Charleston Councilman Wendell Gilliard, but he’s seen strong opposition — as Middleton keeps winning prize endorsements and with South Carolina State University Trustee Maurice Washington expected to pull away some Gilliard supporters.
