[image-1]An alleged shoplifter reportedly made off with a $120 bottle of liquor from an East Bay store, but what he left behind may be more remarkable — the perfect surveillance portrait.
Tuesday evening, officers reported to East Bay Wine and Spirits in reference to a shoplifter. According to an incident report from the Charleston Police Department, a suspect entered the business and began speaking on his cell phone with a friend regarding possibly splitting the purchase of alcohol. The report states that the man then grabbed a bottle and proceeded to the cash register, only to have his credit card declined several times.
Once again asking his friends to split the cost, the man then allegedly grabbed a bottle of Crown Royal XR, valued at $119 with tax, and exited the store. The man was reportedly followed out the door by an employee, but he soon jumped into a white Chevy Cavalier and sped off down Wentworth Street.
The suspect, whose very essence appears to have been captured in surveillance footage, is described as a black man with multiple tattoos, including a pair of lips on his left arm below his shoulder.
While most people are accustomed to grainy footage of suspects that leaves little indication as to their true appearance, the suspect in this incident appears crystal clear. A close-up of the suspect reveals the vulnerability of a man who allegedly longed for nothing more than to have a $120 bottle of booze. The lollipop seen sticking out of his mouth indicates a cavalier, almost childlike puckishnish.
