Staff members from Charleston City Paper’s news, production and sales teams took home a combined 29 awards for the 2019 news contest and 2020 PALMY advertising awards hosted by the South Carolina Press Association.
In the 2020 PALMY advertising awards, City Paper designer Déla O’Callaghan won Designer of the Year for the second straight year. O’Callaghan also won Best in Show honors for ads for The Rarebit created with Account Executive Hollie Anderson. O’Callaghan’s campaigns with Ashley Frantz, Lauren Kesmodel and Cris Temples from the sales staff also took first place honors. The City Paper was also recognized for best niche publication, and best overall advertising in the PALMY awards.
News contest wins last year totaled 15 and included three first-place awards. Former Cuisine Editor Mary Scott Hardaway and former Staff Writer Adam Manno won first for reporting in depth; Art Director Scott Suchy for feature page design and photographer Ruta Smith for personality photograph or portrait. Andy Brack, Sam Spence, Steve Stegelin, Maura Hogan and Dustin Waters were also recognized for their 2019 work in the City Paper. The announcement of 2019 contest winners was initially delayed due to COVID-19.
