Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg proclaimed Nov. 24 as Jack Bass and Nathalie Dupree Day for their contributions to the community and culture of Charleston ahead of their move to North Carolina.
According to the proclamation delivered during Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Tecklenburg noted Bass and Dupree have left “unique and lasting contributions to the culture of our city, region, state and nation” through their works.
Bass has written extensively about the American South, focusing on politics, race relations and law in the civil rights era as a contributor to The Post and Courier. Bass’ writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Atlanta Constitution and elsewhere.
Dupree, best-selling food writer and author who is married to Bass, has been prominently feature in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and others. She has won James Beard Foundation Award for her books.
Dupree contributes to The Post and Courier, Charleston Magazine and The Local Palate. The pair plans to relocate to Raleigh.
“The city of Charleston wishes to honor their contributions to the community and wish them well in their next chapter,” Tecklenburg’s proclamation read.
“Best wishes to you in your new home. Keep writing,” Tecklenburg said during Tuesday night’s meeting.
