Charleston County Emergency Management is monitoring Hurricane Elsa. The threat to South Carolina is unknown as of now, but residents are encouraged to heed forecasts over the next few days as the storm develops.
As of Friday morning, Elsa was located near Barbados in the Caribbean Sea, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.
“It is always important to be prepared and have a family plan during hurricane season,” said Acting Emergency Management Director Joe Coates. “While the effects were minimal, we’ve already experienced a tropical storm and generally the tropics tend to get more active as we get later into the season.
Coates strongly encourages residents of the Lowcountry to check the Charleston County Hurricane Guide, which is also offered in Spanish, and to know your zone and evacuation routes.
The storm is projected to move over the Florida Keys and into the Gulf of Mexico, according to a press release from Charleston County.
