A PIZZA YOU CAN’T REFUSE
Nick and Ben, the D’Allesandro brothers, are the proud owners of Charleston’s newest pizzeria, D’Allesandro’s Pizza, which will open at 229 St. Philip St. in May. The location, in the rapidly gentrifying Elliotborough neighborhood, used to be a corner grocery. In turning the small shop into a pizzeria, Nick says that he and his brother are trying to fill a void in the neighborhood by providing a place “where people can grab a quick bite to eat.” Originally from Philadelphia, the brothers know their pie. Ben, a recent College of Charleston graduate, is an old hand at the pizza toss. He formerly worked for Gilroy’s and Charleston Pizza Kitchen in West Ashley, as well as a pizzeria in Spain. D’Allesandro’s will feature gourmet, hand-tossed, thin crust pizza, subs and salads, beer and wine. The brothers promise to use only the freshest, highest quality ingredients. The new pizzeria will be open for dine-in, take-out, or delivery. You can reach the brothers at 853-6337. —Elle Lien

FRESH IDEAS AT WOODLANDS
Tarver King has been named the new executive chef at Summerville’s five star Dining Room at Woodlands Resort and Inn. Chef King has been with Woodlands for over two years, having previously worked at French Laundry in Napa Valley, California, and Virginia’s Inn at Little Washington. It may be a difficult task to improve upon the acclaimed cuisine at Woodlands, but Chef King is determined. He promises to bring “a little more life into the food,” making it “more flavorful and with more spark.” The menu format will stay the same; with prix fixe four-course meals, a tasting menu, and the decadent “Ultimate Menu,” which features spontaneous creations by King and his staff. King will create “spark” by adding a number of surprises to the menu, including a dish he has titled, “Lobster Pretending to Be Escargot.” The delicate dish includes lobster playfully hidden in escargot shells cooked in lemon butter, garnished with parsley and served alongside a petite salad. Bon appetit! —EL

COFFEE AND BAGELS?
With the new ownership of Mt. Pleasant’s thriving Bodacious Bagels comes a whole new era in tastings. You’ve tried wine, bourbon, and beer, now Bodacious brings you coffee. “What we’re going to be doing is hopefully after-hours coffee tastings of an Italian coffee we’ve found,” says Amber Johnston, one of four in the new family-owned partnership. “We’d like to do some special different coffee drinks, mochas, cappuccinos with our amante, our forte — which is a light roast — and our espresso roast amalfi.” While the schedule is not set in stone, Johnston hopes to begin tastings at the I’On Farmers Market in early May. In the meantime, patrons can enjoy Bodacious’ homemade breads, which include panini and foccacia. Since taking over the business in March, Johnston, her sisters Kathy Faerizio and Miriam Konecny, and their father Plan L. Elvington, have also added homemade cookies, baked fresh daily. Stop by Bodacious Bagels, between I’On and Johnnie Dodds Blvd. in the Bi-Lo Shopping Center, to find out more about the potential caffeinated tastings to come. —Kinsey Labberton
