A fairly nice crowd turned out in the misty, drizzly, foggy evening of Sun. Dec. 13 to watch more than 100 floats roll and several marching bands perform along Coleman Boulevard. The town called it a “Holiday Extravaganza.” It went off without a hitch.
The parade route stretched from Shem Creek to the Sea island Shopping Center (where Coleman splits into Ben Sawyer and Chuck Dawley boulevards). Some floats were quite large and elaborately decorated. Some featured small combos of brass, jazz, or country bands playing as they rolled. Some were basically automobiles with posters and wreaths attached. Tons of local families and visiters were on hand. Tony the Peanut Man was there, too.
Main highlights included several floats packed with local TV news teams or elected town officials, a caravan of old Volkswagen buses, the Burke High School High Steppin’ Bulldog Band, and a float decorated with the old Battle Flags with School Board member Arthur Ravenel celebrating the holidays with the Sons of the Confederates (Moultrie Camp #27) with a small flag in hand.
