Election day is coming up fast, but absentee voting has already begun, so those trying to beat the crowds or avoid the coronavirus have a few choices. Here are the three ways you can vote between now and Nov. 3, along with a handy infographic! (See below.)
In-person absentee voting
Charleston County Council voters do not need to have completed the South Carolina Elections Commission’s application before arriving for in-person absentee voting, as the application can be filled out on-site and in person.
Voters can cast their absentee ballot in person up until 5 p.m. the day before the election. Due to the COVID-19 state of emergency, all voters are now qualified to vote absentee. Voters will be required to show valid photo identification.
Charleston County has four satellite voting locations for in-person absentee voting open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. In addition, these locations will also be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and Saturday Oct. 31.
- North Charleston Coliseum, 5000 Coliseum Drive, North Charleston. Open Oct. 5.
- Seacoast Church, 750 Long Point Rd. Mount Pleasant. Open Oct. 19.
- Seacoast Church, 2049 Savannah Hwy. West Ashley. Open Oct. 19.
- Main Library, 68 Calhoun St. Downtown. Open Oct. 19.
Absentee voting by mail
To vote absentee by mail, voters must first request an application either online at scvotes.gov or by contacting your county voter registration office to be mailed an application.
The deadline for application return is 5 p.m., Oct. 31 by email, fax or by dropping off at the local county office. Keep in mind: the commission recommends voters provide at least two weeks for ballots to be mailed to voters and returned in time.
The Supreme Court has ruled absentee-by-mail voters must obtain a witness signature. To ensure your vote is counted, be sure to sign the voter’s oath on your return envelope, have a witness sign and provide their address, and return your ballot before 5 p.m. Nov. 3.
The Elections Commission recommends voters return their ballots a week prior to the elections to allow time for delivery.
