With a weekend full of beer ahead, we decided to keep it civilized on Friday and headed to the opening of Ali Cavanaugh’s new exhibit Odyssey at Robert Lange Studios. We arrived a little early expecting to walk into a bustling studio, but must have been a little over-eager as we found a fairly empty studio. It turned out for the best as it gave us a chance to talk to Robert and Megan Lange as well as the artist, who was having a big summer. She was celebrating her 40th birthday as well as dropping off her daughter ­— and muse for the last 17 years — for her first year at college.


As the night wore on the studio started to fill, but it was still a quiet event considering it coincided with First Friday. Not wanting to steal all of the artist’s time, we slipped away so she could mingle with the other patrons.

The next afternoon found us at Westbrook Brewing Company for the Meat Beer Fire LOCAL event. Celebrating the unveiling of the fourth Bearded Farmer saison, the Taylor, the brewing company teamed up with LJ Woods Farm and Revival Foods for the event. Farmers Brad Taylor (whom the new saison was named after) and Catherine Compton dished up pork, mac ‘n’ cheese, okra, and barbecue boiled peanuts (hello, deliciousness) to the crowd, who seemed to be enjoying the low-key day. Sitting at picnic tables or hanging out at the bar inside, guests talked and made new friends while sipping on some suds.

The turnout wasn’t huge, but that made the event feel nice — almost like it was just a gathering of close friends. “I forgot it was football season,” Morgan Westbrook explained. We thought it was the perfect pre-gaming location. Good beer and good food, what more could one want? We tried the Taylor and enjoyed it and even managed to sneak in a few words with its namesake, who had driven up from Georgia the day before. He liked the flavors in his beer, but we were more interested in hearing him tell us about trying to deliver some pigs to McCrady’s. We can’t imagine driving a regular car down Unity Alley, but Taylor had to drive his truck down there with his smoker on it. He managed to deliver the goods unharmed, but he thinks the onlooking chefs had a good laugh at him trying to maneuver through the tight space.  

Taylor had to get back to manning the food, so we got back to chatting. Most everyone seemed to be liking the new brew, but our favorite description came from Davis Marret. “Westbrook makes my mouth tingly … the combination of the Bearded Farmer #4 and the barbecue boiled peanuts is a delicious ménage à trois in my mouth.” Knowing nothing could compete with that glowing recommendation, we headed out.

We had high hopes for some antics at King Street’s Second Sunday with it being the start of the NFL season. Sadly, people seemed to be keeping it together and acting responsibly. There was the usual crowd of cute pups, including one cheeky bulldog sitting at a table outside of Kickin’ Chicken, with a Bud Light and all.

We ran into the Carnivalesque troupe roaming the streets and spreading the word about their upcoming show on Sat. Sept. 14. They were definitely dressing for some attention, and it was working. We moved on to Mellow Mushroom, thinking the Falcons vs. Saints game would drum up some action. But even there the fans seemed to be pretty tame.

There were some yells at the TV, but it was all fairly civilized with no hooligan fan shenanigans. Damn. Maybe we were too early for the drunkards, but we left disappointed not having seen at least one person make a fool of himself or herself. Maybe next week?
