The South Carolina Aquarium is honoring former Vice President Al Gore with the Legacy Award for his work on environmental conservancy.

The Legacy Award is a part of the 2010 Environmental Stewardship Awards that recognizes individuals whose lifelong work has inspired others to care about conservation.

Gore is best known as the narrow loser in the 2000 presidential elections, but he’s also been a tireless advocate for the environment and in engaging young people to take action, including his popular works Earth in the Balance and An Inconvenient Truth, as well as his 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Other recipients are The Charleston Battery for The Leadership Award and Dr. Emory Campbell for The Achievement Award.

The Aquarium makes its decisions based on the efforts of individuals and organizations that embody the Aquarium’s mission of conservation. Awards will be presented at the Fourth Annual Environmental Stewardship Awards Gala black-tie affair May 22, 2010.
