Let’s deem this the month of Julia Child, shall we? Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep as Child, opens this week and has spurred a ream of articles on Child’s, cooking, and food culture. Michael Pollan’s cover story in the New York Times Magazine yesterday used Child as a jumping off point to explore the migration of cooks from the kitchen to couch as food becomes a spectator sport to be cheered on from afar, rarely replicated in the home. I guess it’s natural for Julia Child to inspire such reflection, considering the fact that she ushered in a whole new approach to food.
In Charleston, foodies are paying homage to Child’s influence in a couple different ways.
Les Dames D’Escoffier, a philanthropic organization of professional females in the field of food and beverage, will be throwing a big party, screening the movie at the Terrace, passing out cakes made from Child’s own recipes, and raising money for Crisis Ministries and the LDEI Scholarship Fund. That event is scheduled for Mon. Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and is limited to 200 guests. Over at the Charleston Grill, Chef Michelle Weaver will commemorate Julia’s 97th birthday (Aug. 15) by recreating her favorite recipes and offering them on a $49 four-course tasting menu throughout the month.
Expect to see some of Julia Child’s favorites like cream of cucumber soup, classic greens and vinaigrette, and coq au vin. For more information, call (843) 577-4522.
