At last year’s ChazzFest, activities for the kids included some pirate-themed fun, a jump castle, and various games. This year they’ve added an entire stage with two special performers. Aunt Pearlie-Sue (a.k.a. Anita Singleton-Prather) kicks things off with a set of coastal stories and tales, told in the traditional sea island vernacular of Gullah.
Singleton-Prather, native of the Beaufort area, is an award-winning longtime spoken-word performer and singer and has appeared in numerous films, television shows, and video productions including Tales From The Land of Gullah, God’s Gonna Trouble the Waters, Good Morning America, My Man Done Me Wrong, and Forrest Gump.
Prather has been educating children of all ages about the rich culture of the Carolina coast for well over 10 years (visit www.knowitall.org for more). When she’s not telling colorful folk tales and singing educational tunes to kids and families around the state, she works as the Curriculum Coordinator for the education of the Gullah Culture Through the Arts.
