[image-1]The participants in the Southeastern Beard and Moustache Competition (SBMC) don’t need special months to celebrate their facial hair. Forget Movember and Manuary, May is the best beard month, because the facial hair competition is back.
On May 24, the Music Farm will once again host the popular face-off. Categories in the beard competition include everything from “full 12 inches and up beard” to the “young man’s college beard” to the older gentleman’s “salty dog.” Moustaches may fall into either the styled or natural category, and partial beards like mutton chops have their own categories. There’s even a Southern belle contest for the ladies, who can choose to be realistic or creative.
The Beard and Moustache Competition benefits Lowcountry Women with Wings, which provides legal and personal counseling for local women with ovarian cancer. The $10 spectator ticket and the $20 entry fee may not seem like much, but with more than 600 estimated attendees every year, SBMC has raised over $20,000 over the past four years. The SBMC will be more than just a competition. It’s a full weekend celebration of self-expression. There’s a Recovery Room-hosted party on Fri. May 23. Morning-after brunches can be awkward, but not the SBMC’s brunch at Holy City Brewing on Sun. May 25. Food trucks will be on-site to complement beer selection.
For out of town participants and spectators, SBMC has made arrangements with two local hotels. The Best Western as well as the Sleep Inn on Savannah Highway are offering rooms for $149/night to those who mention the Beard and Moustache Competition, which is a deal considering May 24 is Memorial Day weekend.
