Last year saw the so-called reunification of the sister cities and, at least in form, the getting back together of Spoleto Festival USA and Italy’s Festival of Two Worlds, both of which were founded by Gian Carlo Menotti. There was much fanfare on the part of the politicians and much skepticism that anything of substance would happen. But the skeptics were proven wrong when American festival officials began talking about the sharing of programs and expenses with their Italian counterparts. With a renewed European connection, Charleston is starting to look like the cosmopolitan city it always has been.
