It may be a franchised location of an Atlanta chain, but our Mellow Mushroom is owned and operated by College of Charleston grad Michael Shemtov and his best friend Johnny Hudgins, and their King Street shop perfectly reflects the vibe of Charleston. Since opening in 2001, Mellow Mushroom has become a nexus of activity with a bustling bar scene and the best damn gourmet pizza in town. The menu describes Mellow’s pie as “southern.” Unlike New York-style pizza which is all about white flour, yeast, and olive oil, the dough at Mellow Mushroom starts with whole wheat flour and spring water and ends up as a deliciously tasty crust that’s unique. The different topping configurations on the menu also lend themselves to gourmet tastes. They’ve even created some that are only made in Charleston, like the Philosopher’s Pie. Add that to the extensive beer menu, and you’ve got yourself the best combination in town — great beer, great pie, great place.
