Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ
West Ashley. 1205 Ashley River Road. 225-RIBS
Determined to gain recognition for both a tasty Carolina/Tennessee-style barbecue and a variety of Americana/roots music, the newly-opened juke joint Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ — located in the renovated building of Bunch’s Gas Station, which was built in the 1940s — tapped the booking skills and know-how of local agent Tony McKie for their expanding weekly live music lineup. His efforts paid off this month, as they managed to squeak by a handful of medium-sized local venues in the readers’ poll as this year’s Best Jazz & Blues Club.
Since the holidays, McKie and the Home Teamers have booked an impressively diverse series of shows — from blues, jazz, and country to indie-rock, bluegrass, and vaudeville (we remember that hot Asylum Street Spankers gig!). Visiting acts and local bands and songwriters have graced the cozy side-room stage from week to week, jamming on a diverse mix of musical styles.
“We intend to provide the best food, drinks, customer service, atmosphere, and entertainment to the Charleston community on a responsible and consistent level — a level that we believe our customers, performers, and employees deserve,” they say. “We pride ourselves on our experience and knowledge of great food, drink, and live music — a true part of our very demanding personalities.”
While not exclusively a “jazz and blues club” — and there ain’t many under that umbrella in town — Home Team BBQ has hosted more than a few jazz and blues events. Recent highlights include performances by punky swamp-blues vets Dash Rip Rock, Rev. J. Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Big Bill Morganfield (the son of Muddy Waters; the gig was one of the biggies of last month’s Lowcountry Blues Bash), local slide blues player Davis Coen, funk/improv combo Love Butter, and local blues duo Juke Joint Johnny & Drew Baldwin.
The venue sets up the music room and starts charging cover at the front doors at 9 p.m. and the music starts just after 10 p.m. It’s a worthy new addition to the Best of Charleston.
