98X’s A Very Merry Local X-Mas, Volume Deuce

98X’s weekly three-hour show Local X is a fantastic mess of low-fi local demos, high-octane metal tracks, doofy interviews, and obnoxious toilet humor. Just beneath the banter and pre-recorded vignettes (how about some more “I Heard They Suck Live” bits?), hosts Amy Hutto and Toker provide terrific coverage of the local music and club scene. In December, they released the show’s second annual local holiday compilation, A Very Merry Local X-Mas, Volume Deuce. With tracks by eight local rock acts — Broadside, Blindsyght, Near Fatal Fall, Corsica, Virgil Kain, The Tens, At Last Glance, and The DaliDrama — the comp was a funny (if not totally silly at times) combination of covers, originals, and self references (try out Blindsyght’s “Local X-Mas”). The “hidden track” from The Tens with Hutto & Toker titled “12 Days of Local X-Mas” sounds like too many malt liquors and microphones. Fun stuff, but a little inside. Let’s hope next year brings an overblown, prog-rock concept album called Volume Tres!
