Sand Dollar Social Club

7 Center St. Folly Beach. (843) 588-9498

A rustic local entity for three decades, the Sand Dollar has survived Folly’s massive real estate development and several hurricanes (the waterline from Hurricane Hugo’s storm surge in 1989 is still marked on the wall). Somehow, they’ve retained a distinctive personality and charm. Of course, you have to go through all the formalities of joining (filling out a membership application, paying a nominal fee, and waiting 24 hours for admittance), but it’s worth it to be able to stroll inside, order some cold brew, chat with the flip-flopped locals, and check out the bluesy live music on the weekend. Members are allowed to bring guests. On the weekends, the doors are usually (selectively) open for tourists, who get the same friendly service the regulars enjoy.
