James Beard Awards and Barbecue Block Party

June 7-8

First, it was the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, a free event in Madison Square Park that’s put on by Gramercy Tavern owner Danny Meyer (who’ll be in Charleston for the F+W Fest this weekend). Charleston’s own Jimmy Hagood of Black Jack BBQ participated and must have felt at home in the blistering heat of that weekend. He went pit-to-pit with some of the most renowned masters in the country, including Ed Mitchell of N.C. Then, on Sunday Charleston turned it out in style at the Lincoln Center for the James Beard Awards — Robert Stehling of Hominy, Mike Lata of FIG, and Sean Brock of McCrady’s had all made it to the finals. After Stehling nabbed Best Chef: Southeast, a host of Charlestonians were seen partying around town, including Matt Lee (Lee Bros. Cookbook), Mickey Bakst (Charleston Grill), and Karalee Nielsen (Rev Foods). You’ll be glad to know they did an admirable job representin’.
