This time last year, City Paper readers had voted the newly-formed party band Joy Ride as “Best House Band,” mainly for their string of shows at Henry’s and Wild Wings. City Paper‘s Steve Stegelin even put a colorful “family band tree” together, stringing the singers and backing musicians together in an amusing tangle. Within months of winning their award, things started to shift, band members flaked (or got nudged out), and the band nearly lost its momentum. By last fall, however, main arranger and keyboardist Miles Bryan (the Ray Manzarek of Charleston) and co-lead singer Caitlin Cahill had reassembled the band with a solid new cast of players, including singer Jourdan Laws and guitarist/bassist Kevin Kless (both of whom played together in town for years as a duo), drummer Mike Davidson (ex-Bring Out Your Dead), and, occasionally, original bassist/singer Jeff Calafiore. With the double-lady vocal power up front, they’re still on track.
