Martha Lou’s Kitchen
1068 Morrison Drive. Downtown.
There’s soul food, and then there’s Martha Lou’s, where you won’t find any lily white legs peeking from beneath tourist shorts — they’d be scared to death to traverse the upper East Bay/Morrison corridor and step into a hot pink cinder block building pinched between the Columbus Street port terminal and a rather large junkyard. Fortunately for us, the City Paper is so low-rent that one could almost spit into the parking lot from our own uptown digs — which means that staffers can get fat on some of the best fried chicken and butter beans in town. Martha Lou’s is everything a soul food place should be, with tea so sweet it rots teeth on contact and a delightfully greasy smell that wafts across the road at noontime.
