The threat of rough weather forced the Town of Mt. Pleasant to cancel the Blessing of the Fleet events scheduled for April 25 at the newly opened grounds and pier at the Memorial Waterfront Park. Last week, town officials confirmed a rescheduled make-up date for the festival. The 23rd annual event will take place on Sun. May 16 from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

Town event planner Su McManus-Frost says, “The weather may have delayed the festival, but we plan to celebrate the heritage of our Mt. Pleasant shrimp fleet with most of the favorite activities you have come to love and expect.” There’ll be no parade of local shrimp boats, but the family activities, shrimp eating contest, craft shows, sweetgrass basket displays, and live music are still on the bill. Admission and parking are free.

Listen for a variety of beach music and oldies from local DJ Jim Bowers (of 1340 AM The Boardwalk) and the East Coast Party Band — an eight-piece ensemble in matching polos and shorts, armed with such hits as the Tams’ “What Kinda Fool,” Bruce Channel’s “Hey Baby,” and the Embers’ “I Love Beach Music.”
