Popular musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is on tour and making a stop at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center for the Best of Broadway series. The musical centers on six young (and very moody) teenagers trying to fit in during the turbulent years of adolescence by entering a championship spelling bee; clearly, this is bound to get a laugh. Can a group of outsiders fit in but be different at the same time? Before we shudder at the thought of enduring our high school years again, we have to remember that back in 2005, the hit show made it to Broadway and went on to win two Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Featured Actor. So, obviously Spelling Bee is doing something right. And not only is the musical a success, the audience is allowed to participate during the show. Four volunteers are chosen through interviews and questionnaires to go onstage as guest spellers in the bee. Don’t try to Google your way out of this one, kids. —Reina Gascon-Lopez.
