Having your music featured on a hit television show like Grey’s Anatomy definitely won’t hurt your career. Singer-songwriter Brett Dennen knows that first hand. His songs “Ain’t Gonna Lose You” and “Darlin’ Do Not Fear” have been featured on TV, and in turn they’ve propelled the young folk-pop artist into mainstream music. Dennen has been riding a wave of radio-friendly tunes like “Make You Crazy,” “Come Back Kid,” and “Wild Child,” the new single off his latest release, Smoke and Mirrors.

The Northern California redhead brought his lyric-driven show to the Music Farm on Monday. Overall, he put on a fun, heartfelt performance.

My only gripe about the evening would have to be the few overzealous fans that felt it was appropriate to sing “Happy Birthday” at nearly every break. Granted, it was Dennen’s birthday, but one round of the birthday song is enough, right? That aside, it was an intimate crowd, and Dennen was jovial, letting his playful and cheerful self shine.

As the night waned, Dennen loosened up — the shots of tequila may have helped. He closed out the set with a couple of solo-acoustic songs. Finally, he brought opening act Noah Gundersen and his sister, Abbey, up on stage to join him.
