Obviously Henry Brown’s exit was big news for us locally (and kudos to the Post and Courier for having the balls to ask Mark Sanford if he would run for the seat), but it has also caused a national reexamination of the 2010 landscape. Particularly, the storyline that all of these Congressional Democrats were abandoning ship to avoid a trouncing by GOP opposition.
The Washington Post reports today that Brown makes the 14th Republican retiring, compared to 10 Democrats.
Arguments can certainly be made about the relative danger or each district, but it appears that Democrats may see a fresh opportunity in District 1, particularly with a GOP primary that may have more candidates than the gubernatorial race.
Democratic primary candidate Robert Burton of Mt. Pleasant is reportedly hot on the campaign trail to capitalize on the news and 2008 candidate Linda Ketner is reconsidering her decision not to run this year.
