You may have noticed Ken Burger’s recent column in the Post and Courier in which he waxed philosophical about our philandering governor. In that column he wrote: “So with tears in his eyes and remorse in his voice, the 49-year-old two-term governor is now added to a list of fallen angels that includes the likes of President Bill Clinton, former presidential candidate John Edwards, U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, presidential hopeful Gary Hart and, yes, even Jerry Springer, the tabloid talk show host and former mayor of Cincinnati.”

Notice anything strange about this list? That’s right — it’s all Democrats! Ken had to reach all the way back to the 1970s and 1980s to come up with some of these names (who outside of Cincinnati remembers that Jerry Springer was once the mayor of that city?) when he could have found much more recent and relevant names — names like Sen. Larry Craig, the Idaho Republican caught in an airport men’s room stall with, well, with a wide stance. And who could forget former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was leading the impeachment effort against President Clinton for his marital indiscretions at the same time he was carrying on his own affair? And former House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry Hyde, who oversaw the House impeachment trial against Clinton? Only later did it come out that Hyde had had an affair years earlier and broken up a marriage. Hyde defended his own behavior as a “youthful indiscretion.” He was 44 years old at the time!
