Alison Bechdel, the author of the College of Charleston’s the College Reads! selection Fun Home: a Family Tragicomic, will speak at TD Arena on Thurs. Oct. 24. Bechdel is a cartoonist, and her graphic novel-memoir follows her troubled relationship with her father, whom she learns later in life is gay, and her coming out as a lesbian. Her latest work is Are You My Mother, which is a reflection on her relationship with her mother.
The college’s choice of Fun Home caused quite a ruckus late this summer, when Palmetto Family, a conservative Christian organization, criticized the book for its depictions of nudity and sex — which CP‘s Paul Bowers found to be pretty tame — not to mention its treatment of homosexuality.
We have to admit it’s interesting that the talk about Bechdel centered on that, instead of her Guggenheim Fellowship and editing of Best American Comics 2011.
