Free doughnuts! Free doughnuts! Two of the greatest words in one simple phrase. Friday, June 5, is National Doughnut Day and everyone is celebrating those holey dough rounds. Head to Krispy Kreme (6 a.m.-11 p.m.) on Savannah Highway for a free doughnut of your choice, or visit one of the many Dunkin’ Donuts (5:30 a.m.-8 p.m.) locations around the city and pick up a free doughnut with the purchase of a medium beverage. Want to celebrate from the comfort of your own home? Doughnuts are surprisingly easy to make — Try this recipe for flaky coconut cake doughnuts.

Coconut Cake Doughnuts

2 eggs

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup milk

2 tablespoons melted shortening or vegetable oil

2 1/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup flaked coconut

Beat eggs with sugar until light; add milk and shortening. Add sifted dry ingredients and coconut; stir just until blended. Chill several hours. Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/2-inch thick. Cut out doughnuts with doughnut cutter (or can, or whatever round-shaped object you have handy). Fry in deep hot fat (375 degrees F) until brown; turn and brown other side (about 1 minute per side). Drain on paper towel. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Makes 1 dozen.
