The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee is endorsing Joseph P. Riley Jr. for mayor of Charleston and Keith Summey for mayor of North Charleston. Riley has held the office since 1975, Summey since 1994.

“We have, without question, two of the best mayors in the country,” said Ron Jones, Chamber chairman, in a press release. “They need to both be re-elected. And going forward, it is critical that all our mayors demonstrate leadership and decision-making skills of this caliber. Well-qualified, capable elected leaders, in these offices, have a meaningful impact on the competitiveness of our overall business environment and position businesses for future economic prosperity.”

The chamber’s PAC formed in 2000, and it originally only supported school board candidates. This year, it expanded its list of endorsements to include mayoral candidates, and PR Director Emily Maybank says it might endorse City Council candidates in future elections.

The endorsements were made after all of the mayoral candidates sat down for 30-minute interviews with Chamber PAC board members.
