Charleston City Paper earned 14 awards, including five first place honors in the 2020 South Carolina Press Association awards, announced on March 1.
Editor Sam Spence, cuisine editor Parker Milner, photographer Ruta Smith, art director Scott Suchy were among the City Paper staff honored among weekly newspapers. The staff also won awards for editorial writing and website.
Cartoonists Robert Ariail and Steve Stegelin won first and third, respectively, among all papers statewide for their cartoons that appear in each week’s City Paper.
“We’re grateful to our news peers for recognizing what readers get every week — a solid news product filled with outstanding writing and an emerging editorial voice that’s making a difference,” said publisher Andy Brack. “Designer Scott Suchy swept Page One design with three awards and our cartoonists and photographer almost swept their categories, too.”
In all, 800 awards went to SCPA member papers across the state for work published between Nov. 16, 2019, and Nov. 15, 2020. Awards will be presented at a ceremony later this year.
