The Charleston Comedy Festival, now in its 13th year, features world-famous comedians — past performers include John Mulaney, Hannibal Buress, and Doug Benson. With the Stand Up Comedy Competition, regional comedians have the chance to join these big names for the 2016 Charleston Comedy Festival, held next Jan. 20-24.

Comics can enter one of four preliminary rounds of the stand up competition at Theatre 99. While the first round has filled up, aspiring jokesters can register now for prelim round No. 2. Registration is $20.

Each round has 14 stand-up comedians performing five-minute sets. The audience votes on their top two favorite comedians, with the top five vote-getters moving on to semi-finals, which will be held on Fri. Nov. 20 and Sat. Nov. 21.

And what do they win, Vanna? The comedian with the most audience votes along with the comedian with the judges’ votes will win $500 in the finals. The top three final winners will get their own show, the Stand Up Competition Winners Showcase, during Charleston’s Comedy Festival.

If you’d rather laugh than be laughed at (in a good way of course), grab an $8 ticket and check out any of the preliminary rounds. Who knows, you may be the deciding factor in Charleston’s next big star.
