This morning a local source who asked not to be identified sent City Paper footage near the S.C. Aquarium that shows what is best described as a local rendition of an early 2000s street racing scene, with roaring motors audible and speeding cars visible from the aquarium parking garage on the corner of Calhoun and East Bay streets.

The footage is from about 10 p.m., May 6. The source said these sorts of events are common on weekends, and the racers often exit the parking garage to tear down Calhoun or East Bay street.

The racing has the source concerned, as the garage is often not yet emptied by the time the racers begin setting up, especially since this footage is from the the College of Charleston’s graduation weekend, bringing flocks of people to the city.

Charleston Police Department’s public information officer, Elisabeth Wolfsen declined to comment Wednesday morning, until they have time to investigate.

This is a developing story. Be sure to stay tuned to Charleston City Paper for updates.
