Best Accessory: B.b. Children’s Clothing Collection
From picturesque party hats to oversized balloons to darling patent leather Mary Janes, Barbara Beach’s thoughtful accessories perfectly complemented her B.b. Children’s Clothing collection. Even crinoline tutu-like skirts and A-line dresses with exaggerated scallop trim hit a playfully sophisticated note — a feat for a children’s collection — and were skipped down the runway with irresistible cheer. Skillfully selected and employed accessories helped the B.b. Children’s Clothing collection assert its place within an Emerging Designer competition full of adult fashion.
Worst Accessory: JLinSnider Collection
The intricately pleated bodices and asymmetrical hems at Julie Lin Snider’s show were perfection from the ankles up, but lurking on the models’ feet were malevolent, mauve leather pumps. Thwarting one model after another with heel pops, toe slips, and full-foot step outs, the pumps had the audience collectively gasping. Fortunately, the accessory snafu did not overshadow Snider’s strong collection and she was selected to move on to the final challenge.
Biggest Surprise: Julia Faye Davison’s Elimination
If Ralph Lauren and Pocahontas fell in love and decided to trek across the American frontier together, the Julia Faye collection would be the offspring of their stylish courtship. Replete with tastefully placed fringe, revised-classic trench coats, and fluid prairie skirts, the line embodied a uniquely American rustic elegance. Thus, the surprise and disappointment that Davison was not selected as a finalist. At least there’s still the People’s Choice Award title.
Most Popular: Chelsie Ravenel
Ravenel, the devilishly handsome Charleston model-turned-designer, has built an impressive local following, and stood out as the clear people’s champion during the Emerging Designer competition Tuesday night. The energy and volume in the tent noticeably escalated as Kenneth Beatrice, his men’s and women’s ready-to-wear label, debuted. An experienced CFW model himself, Ravenel did not take to the runway during the show, but he did enjoy a victory lap to thunderous applause, adorable son in tow.
All Around Favorite: Larika Page Collection
Boasting bright spring-ready colors and romantic Grace Kelly-esque silhouettes, Larika Page elevated the Emerging Designer competition to a higher level. Tulle abounded, wrapped asymmetrically around bodices, cascaded down ground skimming skirts, and shot in sprigs out of shoulders. From the models’ elegant updos and makeup to the modern and chunky accessories, to the unforgettable garments, Page modernized a classic style in her a way that is uniquely her own. Her Saturday finale presentation will be anxiously awaited.
