The Charleston’s food and wine festival has undergone an official name change. No longer will it be known as the BB&T Charleston Food and Wine Festival. Nope. Now it’s going to be called BB&T Charleston Wine and Food Festival. Subtle, we know, but will it be enough to convince the lawyers from American Express to leave well enough alone?

AmEx owns Food & Wine Magazine and the Aspen Food & Wine Classic and has trademarked all forms of the phrase “food and wine.” According to festival spokesperson Erika McMillan, they were approached by the lawyers last year and given until July to change their name.

“We choose to flip the two in the hopes that our brand would remain the same with our guests,” she says. “It does not reflect our desire to make wine more of a focus than food, both will be equally represented at the 2010 Festival.”
