A bunch of Charleston businesses enjoy local or regional success. And it’s not nothing to have a good run for a few years in business when it’s just your vision versus everyone else.
But there haven’t been many Charleston success stories quite as shiny as Charleston Gourmet Burger Co. In just a few years, Monique and Chevalo Wilsondebriano have transformed their backyard burger company into a national brand that you can find on QVC and on the shelves of Lowe’s and Walmart.
As far as national burger companies go, you can’t get too far without mentioning McDonald’s.
Well this week, the Wilsondebrianos popped up on a podcast discussing their venture with Chris Kempczinski, president of McDonald’s, who admitted that upstart companies like Charleston Gourmet Burger Co. have made some waves in the fast food world at the highest levels. Monique and Chevalo say their first date was at a McDonald’s.
The discussion happened on a new business podcast by Facebook, the social network-turned-privacy monster (Exhibit A, B, C.) We have our hang-ups about FB, and the podcast is a pretty effective bit of propaganda from the new Big Blue, but we just had to share this story.
It’s not often that you get to hear a homegrown company like the Wilsondebrianos’ casually toss out suggestions to a juggernaut like McDonald’s on a podcast from one of the largest, most valuable companies in the world.
