Charleston Jazz has put together a new band called Momentum, featuring keyboardist Demetrius Doctor, drummer Calvin Baxter, bassist LaVonta Green, guitarists Lee Barbour and David Grimm, saxophonist Mark Sterbank and vocalists Corinthian Doctor and Stachia Simmons. The group’s first performance will be at Forte Jazz Lounge downtown March 11 with sets at 7 and 9:30 p.m.

“We’re going to be playing a lot of fusion and soul — playing a little bit of Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder,” Doctor told City Paper. “We want this first show to be an introduction for what the band will be.”

“As musicians, this year we are cautiously optimistic,” Doctor said of 2022’s renewed chance for consistent gigs.

“We are excited about playing new music especially in this band. All of them, the guys and the girls, we love this music. We do a little bit of everything. I wanted this band to be the tunes we grew up playing and grew up listening to. We developed our musicianship from these kinds of tunes. Everybody is excited to be part of the band.”

Tickets for the March concerts are available here.
