[image-1] The Charleston Police Department has opened two new safe exchange zones in downtown Charleston and in West Ashley. The zones hope to reduce and deter fraud, theft, robbery, and volatile custody disputes.
The Safe Exchange Zones offer people who buy, sell, or trade items with strangers a safe place for private party transactions like those that initiate from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Additionally, the area can be used as a safe and neutral site for child custody exchanges.
Both of the new zones are under 24-hour video surveillance. The downtown safe exchange zone is in the surface parking lot of the Charleston Police Department at 180 Lockwood Blvd. The West Ashley safe zone is at the Team 4 office at 3545 Mary Ader Ave.
