If you’ve ever visited the Charleston Pour House, you know it’s a veritable mural-lovers dream; from the scribbled “Mindy hearts Joey” on the bathroom stalls to the eye-popping, colorful wall art on the patio, freedom of expression is at the fore.
PoHo and Charlietown Prints will be reviewing applications to fill 15 new mural spaces for the 2017 mural competition. Entries must be sized based on where the artist wants to paint: 8’x8′(deck area, one spot available), 4’x8′(deck area, one spot available), 6.5’x11′(wooden fence behind The Lot, three spots available), 8’x10′(back yard area, 10 spots available). Applicants must be 18 or older, submit samples of the proposed mural image, and can submit only original work.
The 15 murals will be chosen in early August by a panel of Pour House staff and Charlietown Prints; artists are encouraged to channel “Love, Live, and Music” when creating their pieces.
Public voting will run Sept. 3 through 10. First, second, and third place winners will be announced on Sept. 13. The first place winner receives a $500 cash prize, one year admission into Pour House shows, and their mural image will be used as the new design for PoHo T-shirts. The second place winner receives a $200 cash prize, a $50 Pour House gift certificate, and three months of free admission to shows. The third place winner receives a $100 cash prize, a Pour House merch package, and one month of free admission to shows.
