Charleston Symphony Orchestra now offering youth strings ensemble, broadening educational offerings

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has announced a new initiative to broaden its educational and community engagement programs with the Charleston Symphony Youth Strings Ensemble (CSYS), beginning in the Orchestra’s 2019-2020 season.

The CSYS will serve as a bridge to the Charleston Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) and is designed to teach and prepare students for the demands of playing in a full symphony orchestra.

“The CSO believes that the study of music is a fundamental component of any complete education, especially for young students,” says Michael Smith of CSO. “And we feel compelled to provide this service to our community. This initiative will further our reach and strengthen the benefits of education through music.”

The strings ensemble is open for students grades 5 to 9 who have a good command of basic technique, strong posture, and the ability to read music. Students outside of the age range will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The CSYS will rehearse on Sundays at the Charleston County School of the Arts from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Auditions will be held at the Allegro Charter School of Music on May 11.

The Charleston Symphony is currently searching for a CSYS conductor. The deadline to apply is April 5 and auditions will be held April 14.
