Ask a chef to imagine a day without food and you might see some tears. “As chefs, we’re constantly surrounded by an abundance of ingredients,” commented McCrady’s Chef Sean Brock. “Sometimes we take that for granted.” Yet this unfathomable scenario is a sad reality for millions of Americans, many of them children.
Tuesday night’s A Tasteful Pursuit dinner at McCrady’s served as a benefit for national charity Share Our Strength, which aims to end childhood hunger by 2015. The organization hosts a myriad of food-related fund-raisers throughout the country, but Tuesday marked its return to the Charleston area.
Sean Brock, a three time participant with A Tasteful Pursuit, stepped up to host his first such dinner at his Unity Alley restaurant. Joining him were Ken Vedrinski of Trattoria Lucca, FIG’s Mike Lata and his old friend from The Capitol Grille in Nashville, Tyler Brown. Together, they delivered five mouth-watering courses, among them Lata’s Wild King Salmon and Vedrinksi’s Ravioli del Plin.
In addition to the $95 per plate ticket, the sold-out event also featured a live and silent auction. If only we’d had the bones to bid on an afternoon down on the farm with Brock — that treat alone raised $2,000 to fight child hunger.
