Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is the latest local official to target texting drivers.
The City Council will have its first discussion Tuesday regarding drivers sending messages on their cell phone when they should be keeping their hands at 10 and 2. Riley has asked city staff to draft an ordinance that would ban texting and e-mailing. It would also prohibit drivers from reading text messages or e-mails.
“I know that the safety of those who utilize the city’s public right-of-ways is of utmost concern to you as well,” Riley wrote yesterday in a letter to council members, saying the goal is to protect these people from the harms of texting drivers.
Mt. Pleasant is expected to take an initial vote on its own texting while driving ban in April. Bills seeking a statewide ban are also working through the legislature in Columbia.
