From the City of Charleston:

The City of Charleston has agreed to provide funding for the Shaw Unit of the Boys and Girls Club through the holidays.  This funding will keep the doors of the facility open until the first of the year.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. said, “This program provides valuable after school programs for the children in Eastside neighborhoods near the club on Mary Street. During the holidays when school is out and parents are at work, the programs are even more critical. This short term funding will pay for staff and daily services as well as utilities and other expenses during this time to get the Shaw Unit through the holidays. It is our hope that during this time, the administration and staff of the Boys and Girls Clubs will be able to pick up the funding for the facility again. It is also our hope that the community will join together to help fund this important program for our children. Providing a safe place for students to be after school is a benefit for our community and our children.”

The City will be providing approximately $5,000 from the City Contingency Fund for the nine days of operation during the holidays. Mayor Riley added, “This relatively small amount will provide supervision and learning for a short time for the neighborhood children.  Your company or individual donation will also go a long way in offering more of this valuable program.”
