OK. I was wrong about the image of the Cloverfield monster the other day. And boy am I glad. That thing looked like a frog with a pencil stuck in its head left to rot in Joan Rivers’ medicine cabinet, among the botox creme and laxatives.

However, Harry Knowles over at Ain’t It Cool has the first review of Cloverfield and in typical fashion Harry is all a-gush so take his enthusiasm with a grain of salt. (Personally, when it comes to reviews at Ain’t It Cool, Moriarty, Capone, and Quint are far more tempered than Knowles and generally the more accurate critics.)

By the way, NPR’s All Things Considered ran a pretty informative report on the online marketing of Cloverfield and the mystery surrounding it. Read it and understand what all the fuss is about.

My prediction: Cloverfield will be a moderate hit but then again it has a moderate budget. The critics will be split, endlessly comparing the flick to the Blair Witch Project and the marketing hype to Snakes on a Plane. The buy every Star Wars action figure fanboys will proclaim it’s greatness or shat upon it relentlessly; there is no middle ground when it comes to movies carrying such high expectations, and this one has it (Produced by J.J. Abrams of Lost and Alias fame, boasting an internet campaign which had the web world speculating that the once untitled Cloverfied was in fact a remake of Godzilla; a big screen adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories, starring the world destroying Cthulhu; and Voltron. Yeah, Voltron. You have no idea how fiercely how some fanboys fought for this silly idea. Very very embarrassing. )

Speaking of genre films, I caught The Orphanage over the weekend. Good stuff. I’ll try to write up a review in the next couple of days, but there’s a paper to put out, football to watch, and far too much to read.
