The Charleston Comedy Festival took over downtown last week, bringing talented comedians from all over the country to the Holy City. It was by far the coldest week of the year, but most of our funny visitors found the temps a relief from the insane winter of the arctic north (Chicago and NYC). The week kicked off on Wednesday with a Stand-Up Showdown to determine the funniest person in Charleston, as well as some favorite Theatre 99 shows. The local focus continued on Thursday, then on Friday and Saturday, the big boys arrived — acts like God’s Pottery, FUCT, Hot Sauce, Peter Gross, and more packed houses, making it clear that Charlestonians love love love comedy. FUCT was probably the most-talked-about show of the fest, with enough manginas and questionable humor in their act to make someone call the po-po. Stand-up comics like Rory Scovel and Jon Steinberg, along with improv groups Cook County Social Club and I Eat Pandas completely sold out their shows. But one of the most underrated shows of the festival was probably Roseville, whose most memorable scene consisted of a crazy little girl calling her cat. Over and over and over again. The afterparties at Mellow Mushroom were a great place to kick back and meet the comedians after a night of rushing between shows.
