Free Verse 2018 | Poetry on the go

In addition to a week of events — from a student poetry show to an evening of dance — held later this month, Free Verse Poetry Festival returns to Charleston with an entire month of public poetry. The city’s first poetry festival, now in its second year, presents poetry in public places around town. Look for ‘lost poems,’ words on windows, and poems on bikes now through Oct. 31. Last week we got a taste of what one of the ‘lost poems’ had to offer. Here’s how it works: be on the lookout for flyers that say, well, Lost Poem, and tear off one of the perforated tabs. Call the number on the paper and enjoy. Easy, right? To hear a poem for yourself simply dial (843) 300-1680.

Now through Oct. 31. Various locations around town. Learn more at

Omar Shrine Temple | That Big Book Sale

There’s nothing quite like the opportunity to peruse over 70,000 books, CDS, DVDs, maps, and more, to get you out of the house and to Omar Shrine Temple this weekend. The 37th annual BIG Book Sale, hosted by the Charleston Friends of the Library, offers a vast array of reading (and watching) material, with prices starting as low as 50 cents. The best part is knowing that proceeds support more than 7,000 free community programs offered through the Charleston County Library system (just check out over cover story, p. TK to see how important those are).

Fri. Oct. 12, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Sat. Oct. 13, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. Oct. 14, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Free to attend. Omar Shrine Temple, 176 Patriots Point Road. Mt. Pleasant.

Audubon Sanctuary | Kevin Kurtz Book Launch

Head to the Audubon Sanctuary at Francis Beidler Forest for the release of author and educator Kevin Kurtz’s book, A Day in a Forested Wetland. Kurtz’s experiences at Beidler Forest were part of the inspiration for this book — and you can walk through forest’s swamp to see those very inspirations for yourself.

Sat. Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. Free to attend. Audubon Sanctuary, Hwy. 178, Francis Beidler Forest Road. Summerville.
