During the Anglo-Cherokee War of 1759-1761, an enslaved man named Abraham won his freedom from the government of South Carolina by performing a series of deeds that not only displayed remarkable physical endurance and bravery, but also saved many lives. Join CCPL’s historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for an introduction to the dramatic, real-life story of Abraham, one of the many forgotten black heroes of early South Carolina.

First Baptist Church | Beyond the Fields: Slavery at Middleton Place
Enjoy a free screening of the award-winning documentary film Beyond the Fields: Slavery at Middleton Place to honor Black History Month. Beyond the Fields — Slavery at Middleton Place (which won a gold medal from the Southeastern Museums Conference for excellence in the use of technology) is the culmination of research undertaken in the early 2000s, that explores the history of both black and white residents of Middleton Place. Beyond the Fields — the book, documentary, and exhibit in Eliza’s House, a freedman’s house on the property — seeks to offer a raw look at what took place at the plantation, highlighting the roles slaves had. Middleton Place offers a tour that offers “an unvarnished look at the reality of slavery,” including a visit to the stableyards and the plantation chapel.

Head to Neema Gallery every Thursday for sweetgrass basket Thursdays. Neema Gallery artist and ninth generation sweetgrass basket artist, Angela Stoneworth will answer all of your questions about sweetgrass baskets. Some of the topics covered will include: the function of sweetgrass baskets past and present; the difference between basket weaving and sewing; the origin of sweetgrass baskets; sweetgrass basket designs and composition. Stoneworth will also discuss what to look for in an heirloom quality basket. Baskets will be available to purchase for all interested parties along with a drawing for a free small basket held at the conclusion of each session. Reserve your spot online. Private group sessions are also available by request.

Addlestone Library | Bernard Powers Lecture, part of CLAW’s Vesey Conspiracy at 200 Conference
Bernard Powers, author of Black Charlestonians, will deliver the opening keynote lecture at the CLAW program’s conference on Denmark Vesey and Black Abolition in the Atlantic World. Known mainly as a conspiracy of Carolina slaves, the “Denmark Vesey Conspiracy” also ensnared free people of color and should be treated as a part of the broader black resistance to slavery in the Atlantic World.
